History
According to researches of heritage experts, early in the Northern Qi period, the great wall and pass had been built in Jinshanling area. The remains can be found now. But the great wall at that time was low and thin, mostly built by earth and rock. In 1368, Zhu Yuanzhang overthrew Yuan Dynasty and set up the Ming Dynasty. He ordered General Xu Da to buit the great wall on Juyongguan, Gubeikou and Xifengkou, and send massive forces stationed. In 1570, General Qi Jiguang largely repaired, renovated and expanded these sections and newly built more than 1300 watchtowers, which lasted 16 years. In the next several decades, the great wall had been constantly repaired and formed the strong line of defense with high walls and bristling fortress.
Jinshanling Great Wall is an important part of this vast military engineering. In 1987, Jinshanling Great Wall was listed as one of the world cultural heritage sites and one of the AAAA-grade national tourist attractions of China.

Construction
Jinshanling Great Wall was built on the Big and Small Jinshanling, hence its name. With an elevation of 700 meters, the wall is built with huge bricks, each of which weighed about 26 pounds. There are 5 passes, 67 watchtowers and 3 beacon towers along the great wall. These watchtowers are all ten meters high and either one-storied or two-storied. They have different structures and different functions. Some are used to store food, hay and weapons, and some are used as soldiers' bedrooms. Some watch towers have stairways to get up and down, and some only have vertical holes in the roof of first floor, which need rope ladders. The roofs of the watchtowers are flat, arched, quadrangular or octagonal. Among these watchtowers, the Big and Small Jinshan Watchtowers, the Wangjinglou Tower, the General Tower, the Black Tower and the taochun Tower are most famous. Each has its legend. The big Jinshan Watchtower has two storeys connected by stone stairs. There is a small room on the top, which is used as soldiers' bedroom. It was said that Big and Small Jinshan Watchtowers were built by 3000 soldiers from the Jiangsu and Zhejiang Provinces led by Qi Jiguang. To remind their hometowns, they used the names of bigger and smaller Jinshan Islands in Zhenjiang City of Jiangsu Province to name the two watchtowers. According to the legend, the stone bars used to build the Wangjinglou Tower were carried to the mountain top by Er Lang Shen, who is the nephew of the Jade Emperor. To protect the watchtowers, rows of 3-meter-high Obstacle Walls were built on the slope leading to them. In case the enemies reached the top of the great wall, the defenders would fight behind these walls. Moreover, battlements, parapets and shooting holes make the great wall more impregnable. Tens of thousands of bricks were marked with Chinese characters, which recorded when the brick was made and which troop built that section of the wall.
