Introduction

    • Jiankou Great Wall is one of the most steep and dangerous sections of the Great Wall of China. It is located in Huairou Country and connects the Mutianyu Great Wall in the east. The great wall displays a shape of W, like a fully-bent bow nocking the arrow, so named Jiankou(Arrow Nock). Jiankou Great Wall retains its original appearance since its construction. With its unique style, steep mountains and beautiful scenery, Most of the great wall pictures are taken from here.

    Transportation

    • Public bus: Take bus 916 from Dongzhimen Station and get off at Yujiayuan Station in Huairong District, then take the bus(Huairong-Xizhazi) to Xizhazi Village. The departure time of bus is 11:30 am and 4:30 pm.
  • Private car is the best method to visit Jiankou Great Wall with local tour operator.

    History

  • Jiankou Great Wall was constructed in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) by General Qi Jiguang, the famous hero resisting to the Japanese pirates. It was built with large light colored rocks which can be seen from a great distance. The great wall has never been restored since its construction. It symbolizes the Great Wall’s rugged legacy.

    • Built along the ridges with steep cliffs on each side, Jiankou Great Wall is one of the most steep and dangerous sections of the Great Wall of China. But because of its unique style, steep mountains and beautiful scenery, it has become a popular destination for photographers and experienced hikers. Consisting of 28 watch towers, the wall has many scenic sites worth to visit. The main sites include Eagle Flies Facing Upward, Sky Stairs, Nine-Eye Tower, Beijing Knot and Zhengbei Tower.
      The highest towers of the Jiankou Great Wall is called "Eagle Flies Facing Upward". It appears so high that the eagle flying there can has to face upwards before reaching the top of the tower.
      The stairs leading to the "Eagle Flies Facing Upward" are really steep with an angle of elevation at about 70 to 80 degrees. They are so narrow that it is barely possible to obtain a foothold. The precipitous stair are called "Sky Stairs".
      Nine-Eye Tower was used to be an important command post during the wars in ancient time. The tower has three layers and nine holes which look like nine eyes on each side.
      Beijing Knot is the meeting point for three different converging sections of the Great Wall, Mutianyu, Huanghuacheng and Jiankou Great wall.
      Zhengbei Tower is the good place to enjoy the beauty of the sunrise and the sunset. In addition, visitors can visit Wofo Mountain Resort. There is an Ancient Dragon Pool in the resort. Formed by springs at the foot of the mountain, the pool is the biggest breeding place for rainbow trout, a very delicious fish.

      Hiking Route

    • Jiankou Great Wall can be climbed from the south side or north side. The south side is called Qian(Front) Jiankou. This side is s much longer and steeper. Some sections are almost straight up and down. The north side, called Hou(Back)Jiankou is more easily reached from Xizhazi village.

      Travel Tips

    • 1. Built on ridges with steep cliffs on each side, Some sections of Jiankou Great Wall have been collapsed. It is not recommended for inexperienced mountain hikers. It is a good choice to hike with other partners.
      2. Bring much water and some snacks to keep your energy. 3. There are some farmhouses on the foot of the great wall. They offers local food and the delicious baked rainbow trout. Some can also provide accommodation.
