- History of Gubeikou Great Wall
-
In 555 during North Qi Dynasty, the great wall was built in the Gubeikou area as a defence against the north nomads. But it was built with dirt and stone, and it's not well preserved. The wall was renovated in the Tang Dynasty. In Jin Dynasty (1115 - 1234), a general built an iron gate to guard the pass, so Gubeikou Pass is also named 'Iron Gate Pass'.
In the early Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), General Xuda extended and enhanced Gubeikou Great Wall with more beacon towers and pass gates. In 1567, General Qi Jiguang rebuilt the wall. He built another layer of bricks outside the earliest Northern Qi walls, creating a unique Gubeikou double-lined walls. A firm defensive line was formed including high walls, beacon tower, watch towers and other military constructions.
No rebuilding or renovation was done since then.
