Introduction of Wangfujing Street

  • Wangfujing Street is one of the most famous commercial streets in Beijing and even in China. It is located in center of Dongcheng District of Beijing City. The street starts from the south end of Meishuguan East Street in the north, connecting with Wusi Street and Dongsi West Street, and reaches East Chang'an Street in the south, connecting with Taijichang Street. The total length is 1.8 kilometers, and the southern section is Wangfujing Pedestrian Street. With a history of over 700 years, Wangfujing Street is a paradise of shoppers. A large number of department stores and shops with modern and fashion brand stand on the both sides of the street. Wangfujing Snack Street provides various kinds of foods from all over China.

  • Origin of the Name
  • During the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), Wangfujing Street was called "Ding Zi (T-shape) Street". In the 15th year of Yongle in Ming Dynasty (1417), the street was renamed "Shi Wangfu(Ten Royal Mansions) Street" or "Wangfu(Royal Mansions) Street" because ten royal mansions were built on the east side. In the 31st year of Guangxu in the Qing Dynasty (1905), the Qing government redefined the names of some streets and lanes. "Wangfu Street" was changed to "Wangfujing(Royal Mansion Well) Street", because there is a is a sweet water well in the west of the street.

    • Shengxifu Hat Store (盛锡福) Shengxifu Hat Store was founded in 1911. The hats produced in the store are famous for their fine materials, exquisite craftsmanship and high quality. Built in 1655, the church is a three-story Roman architecture, mixing Chinese features in its design. Many precious religious paintings drawn by Giuseppe Castiglione are preserved inside. A large square was built surround the church.
