Brief Itinerary

  • Day 1. Yungang Grottoes, Huayan Monastery, Nine Dragon Screen.  
  • Day 2. Sakyamuni Wooden Pagoda.  

Detailed Itinerary

  • Day 1. Yungang Grottoes, Huayan Monastery, Nine Dragon Screen.  

  • In the morning, you will be picked up from hotel or exit of train station.
    Proceed to Yungang Grottoes. First excavated in 460 during the Northern Wei Dynasty, Yungang Grottoes are considered the first among three famous grottoes in China for its tremendous size, ancient history, and relatively complete state of preservation.
  • Then visit Huayan Monastery. As the largest and best preserved monastery of the Liao Dynasty(907-1125), Huayan Monastery houses five large Buddha statues in Mahavira Hall, precious Buddhist writings in Bhagava Sutra Hall and the second largest wooden pagoda in China.
    Go on to Nine Dragon Screen. The screen was built in 1392 during the Ming Dynasty. Made of 426 colorful glazed tiles, it is the largest glazed screen in China. Nine majestic flying dragons are depicted on the screen.
    Be transferred to hotel after the tour.

  • Day 2. Sakyamuni Wooden Pagoda.  

  • Be picked up from hotel at 08:30 in the morning.
    Drive to visit Sakyamuni Wooden Pagoda. Also called Yingxian Wooden Pagoda, Sakyamuni Wooden Pagoda was built 1056 during the Liao Dynasty. It is the highest wooden pagoda in the world. The pagoda looks like five storeys, but has nine storeys in fact. Many Buddha sculptures and frescos are housed in the pagoda.
  • After the tour, be transferred back to your hotel in Datong or Datong train station for departure.
