Jiaozhuanghu Underground Tunnels
Jiaozhuanghu is located in Northeast Shunyi District of Beijing. It was formed in Ming dynasty and got its name from the people's last name there.
Jiaozhuanghu has the best preserved underground tunnels in China and it is the revolutionary cultural relics protection unit with Jiaozhuanghu militia history of revolutionary struggles showroom and remains of Jiaozhuanghu underground tunnels. The underground tunnels are formed during the struggles against Japan invading army. At first, only separate hidden caves are built for two or three people to hide. Later with the accumulation and summary of the struggling experience, separate caves are connected to form the tunnels. Finally, an underground tunnel network of 17 km long were formed through villages near away.
The inner tunnels are crossed and each of the household are connected. Turning plate for water proof and poison gas proof were equipped. Combat command center, meeting rooms and lounge were also set in the tunnel for long-time battle and life.
During the anti-Japanese war and liberation war, Jiaozhuanghu people use the underground tunnels and mines to struggle with the enemy. Due to the military exploit, Jiaozhuanghu was called People's First Fortress.
