Built in the first year of the Zhida reign in the Yuan Dynasty(1308), Guozijian covers an area of 28,000 square meters with three courtyards. On the central axes, there are jixian Gate, Taixue(Imperial College)Gate, Glazed memorial Arch, Biyong Hall, Yilun Hall and Jingyi Hall. There are two halls and six main rooms, Imperial tablet Pavilion, Bell and Drum Pavilion lined traditionally and symmetrically beside the central axes.

In the Imperial College, there are all ancient Chinese Scholar Trees. In ancient Chinese feudal society, Chinese Scholar Tree was the tree of doctors. They were planted in Guozijian, which represented the students there could reach the government offices through the exams. So the Wenchang Scholar Tree is closely related with the fortune of the candidates. More than 700 years from Yuan Dynasty, Chinese Scholar Tree is the host tree in Beijing.
