Biyun Temple is located on north of the Fragrant Hills Park. First built in 1331, Biyun Temple is a compact and well-preserved garden style temple. In accordance with the mountain, the whole temple includes separately closed courtyards. The double stone lion in front of the mountain gate, the clay painted sculptures in the palace and the murals in Maitreya palace are all art treasures.
Since constructed in Yuan Dynasty, Biyun Temple now has more than 600 years' history. A eunuch Yu Jing in Ming dynasty had fancied this place, he enlarged Biyuan Temple and set his grave behind the temple and planted a pine on the grave. Because of this history, local people also called Biyun Temple Master Yu Temple. But Yu Jing did not realize his dream because of his prison experience.
During the period of Ming Xizong, Wei Zhongxian also fancied this place and it was enlarged again. Till then the temple had formed its characteristic of Ming dynasty.
During Qing Dynasty, the beautiful sublime Biyun Temple attracted the emperor and the imperial concubines. In 1748, the emperor Qian Long sent to repair Biyun Temple in large scale. Keeping the existing temple, he built the new Throne Tower with Arhat Palace on the left and temporary dwelling palace on the right.
Architecture and Structure
In the Arhats Hall, the statues of the 500 Arhats are all about 1.5 meters high. Their figures are just like the normal human beings. They have their own different profiles, which are vivid and valid. Some of them sit quietly with their eyes closed while some smiled with their head down. Some sit with their chest open while some with their old figures showing to the public.
Fountain Courtyard is a good and quiet place in the temple. The most famous plant in the yard is the Three Generation Trees, which consists three kind of trees in one. There is also a natural flowing spring in the yard which is called Shui Quan. The spring water flows from the stones and gathered to be the pool. The spring water is sweet and tasty. The plants, flowers, spring water and the fake mountain around the pool constitute a beautiful and quiet courtyard garden.
Legend and Story:
In 500 Arhats Hall, the famous Chinese ancient character Ji Gong sits on the beams in the north. It was said that on the day they ordered the Arhats, Ji Gong came earlier before the gate opened. And just at that time, he came across a playboy grabbing a girl. Ji Gong saved the girl. But when he returned, all seats are full. He had no idea and just took the beams as his seat.
Views from Travelers:
The four seasons in Biyun Temple are quiet and beautiful! Different from the Fragrant Hills, there is less noise and more pious to life. It is said that Biyun Temple is the most completed temple in West Mountain sceneries.
The 500 Arhats in Biyun Temple is very interesting. You can find the one of yourself and see whether it's happy or sad. One of the features of Biyun Temple is that the coffin of Sun Zhongshan had been once put here until Zhongshan Mausoleum in Nanjing was finished constructed.
I went by Biyun Temple when I climbed the Fragrant Hills. It was worth visiting. Especially the summit of Biyun Temple, it is marvelous!
