The Wanshou Temple, the home of the Beijing Art Museum, has a long and fascinating history. It was commissioned by Emperor Wanli of the Ming Dynasty and underwent several renovations and expansions during the Qing Dynasty, including significant work by Emperors Kangxi, Qianlong, and Guangxu. These renovations transformed the temple into a grand complex that combined elements of a temple, a royal palace, and a garden.
In 1979, the Beijing Municipal People's Government declared the Wanshou Temple a "key cultural heritage of preservation."
In 1985, plans were initiated to establish the Beijing Art Museum within the temple complex, and it was officially established in 1987.

Beijing Art Museum covers 30,000 square meters including 14,000 square meters of construction. Making use of the setting of the ancient architecture, the Museum has 5 thematic exhibitions including historical exhibition of Wanshou Temple, Buddha art exhibition, exhibition of china art and crafts in Ming and Qing dynasty and painting art exhibition.
