The total area of Venezuela is 912,050 sq km and its land area is 882,050 sq km. Venezuela is located in the northern part of South American and it lies between Guyana and Columbia. It shares its boundaries with countries such as Brazil, Colombia and Guyana. There are 4 well defined and principal geographical divisions of Venezuela. The Maracaibo lowlands lie in the northeast and llanos or the vast Orinoco Plains occur in the central part. In the southeast lie the Guiana highlands and in the northwest lie the Maracaibo Lowlands and Andes Mountains. The climate in Venezuela is hot, humid and tropical, while in the highlands it is moderate. The vegetation of Venezuela ranges from the epiphytes of the rainforest to the desert cacti. Over 250 different species of mammals are found in the country. The flora is very diverse with species ranging from various birds to reptiles.
Climate and Weather
The climate varies according to altitude. Lowland areas have a tropical climate, while mountainous regions are significantly cooler. Pack a sweater or jacket if you're planning to spend any time in the Andes. The rainy season runs from May to December. During this period, there is the possibility of flooding in certain low-lying areas, such as the Llanos and in some valleys of the Andes. Various parts of Venezuela, including Caracas and the eastern part of Sucre, are vulnerable to earthquakes, although there have been no serious ones for many years.
Population
Venezuela had a population of 26 million people. Some 70% of the population are Mestizo, defined as a mixture of any other races; another 20% are unmixed caucasians, mostly of Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and German descent. Other important groups include Afro-Venezuelans, though their numbers are unclear due to poor census data. Asians, predominantly Lebanese and other Arabs, Chinese and Turkish descent, make up a small percentage of the population. Only about 5% of Venezuelans are Indigenous. These groups were joined by sponsored migrants from throughout Europe and neighboring parts of South America by the mid-20th century economic boom.
Transportation
Venezuela now has a broad network of inner air links and in some cases is not longer necessary to pass by the main airport of Caracas to reach your next destination. Small planes are used to serve the remote camps and spots of the Amazon and the Lost World. The only ferry connections link the mainland with Margarita, Venezuela’s biggest island. Boats depart from La Guaira, on the coast close to Caracas, Puerto La Cruz and Cumana. The infinite river systems of the Amazon and the Lost World are constantly cruised by indigenous dugout canoes (Curiaras), wooden bongos and boats. Land transportation is the most popular due to the very cheap gas and the extensive network of paved roads, one of the best in Latin America.
