Hungary is situated in the Carpathian Basin in Middle-Europe. The country extends 268 Km in North-South direction and 526 Km in East-West direction.
50 % of the territory of Hungary is plain. The Great Plain can be found in the eastern part of the country, while the Small Hungarian Plainis located at the north-western border.
Hungary has two main rivers: the Danube ( 417 km long in Hungary ) and the Tisza ( 598 Km long). Both rivers flow in north-south direction and divide Hungary into 3 parts.
Climate and Weather
Hungary has a temperate continental climate that is influenced by three main factors: the Eastern-European continental, the Western-European oceanic and the Mediterranean influence.
There are substantial differences among the average temperatures of the four seasons. Usually January is the coldest, while the hottest months are July and August in Hungary .
The daily temperature fluctuation is quite high. The annual average temperature is about 12 °C , the maximum is 38 °C , the minimum is around -10 °C .
Spring starts in early April and is accompanied by lots of showers. The summers are dry and warm. Autumns are cool, foggy and rainy. Winters are relatively short, moderately cold and usually dry, but sometimes brilliant sunny. The little snow the city gets usually disappears after a few days.
The yearly rainfall is about 415 mm that consist of two stronger (early summer and autumn) and two dryer periods (middle of winter and early autumn).
Population
Hungary is home to over 10.5 million people, the vast majority of whom are ethnic Hungarians, or Magyars. Minorities—only three percent of the entire population—include Germans, Romanians, and Slovaks. Hungary is also home to many Romanies and Jewish peoples. The Magyars are Central Asian in origin, and their language is unrelated to the language of Slavic peoples, who dominate Eastern Europe. (Poles, Czechs, Slovaks, Serbs, Croats, and Russians are all Slavic peoples.) Twenty percent of the entire population lives in Budapest, the capital, while the next largest city has a population almost ten times less.
Transportation
Public transportation in Budapest is excellent. Budapest and its environs are well serviced by a network of buses, trams, trolleys, and subway lines. Ticketing is on the honor system; however, Metro police make routine ticket checks and will issue on-the-spot cash violations for failure to present a correctly punched, valid ticket or metro pass. Monthly and yearly passes are available at major metro stations and can be used for all forms of public transportation. For more information on fares and services, please visit the web site of Budapest Transport Limited (BKV).
Taxis are readily available 24 hours a day and, despite some documented taxi scams, are reasonably priced. Fares vary depending on the company and the time of day. A highly dependable Minibus service operates to and from Budapest’s Ferihegy Airport; its set fare is considerably less than a taxi.
