Geography

The Maldives, officially the Republic of Maldives, is an island nation consisting of a group of atolls in the Indian Ocean. The Maldives is located south of India's Lakshadweep islands, and about seven hundred kilometres (435 mi) south-west of Sri Lanka. The twenty-six atolls of Maldives' encompass a territory featuring 1,192 islets, two hundred and fifty islands of which are inhabited.

Climate and Weather

The Maldives' equatorial climate is generally hot and humid, with a mean temperature of about 27°C (81°F). The weather during the northeast monsoon (November–March) is mild and pleasant; the southwest monsoon (June–August) is violent and very rainy. The northern atolls are subject to more violent storms than those in the south. Annual rainfall in the south averages about 380 cm (150 in); in the north, 250 cm (100 in).

Population

The population of Maldives was estimated by the United Nations at 318,000, which placed it as number 167 in population among the 193 nations of the world. The people of the Maldives descend from four ethnic groups Sinhalese, Dravidian, Arab, and African. The main language spoken is Maldivian Divehi (dialect of Sinhala, script derived from Arabic).
Population density is highest in peninsular Malaysia, home to some 20 million of the country's 27 million inhabitants. The remaining 7 million live on the Malaysian portion of the island of Borneo in the large but less densely-populated states of Sabah and Sarawak. More than half of Sarawak's residents and about two-thirds of Sabah's are from indigenous groups.

Transportation

The transport sector is dominated by maritime and air transportation. Male, the country's commercial and financial center, has a well developed sea port and country's only international airport for passenger traffic.
Ports.
The country also has some 90 manmade harbors, as well as several natural harbors and jetties to access the inhabited atolls. However, transportation facilities to most islands are inadequate.
Air transportation.
The former military airport at Gan handles international freight transportation. There are also three regional airports in the southern part of the archipelago and one in the northern atolls, as well as a number of private airstrips.
Roads.
Paved roads are few: some 60 km in Male, and 14 km each on the Laamu and Addu Atolls. Village roads are mainly of compacted coral.

Best Travel Time

If you're looking for a few extra hours of sunshine then you should visit the Maldives between December and April, which is the dry season. This however is the high season, and resorts can be fully booked and prices are higher than the rest of the year. The Christmas-New Year period is the busiest and most expensive part of the high season. Between May and November it's still warm, but the skies can be cloudy, humidity is higher and rain is more likely.

Food and Drink

National specialties:
Seafood is widely available, such as tuna, grouper, octopus, jobfish and swordfish.
Kavaabu (deep fried snacks made from rice, tuna, coconut, lentils, and spices).
Curries, such as chicken or beef, are widely available. Curry leaves are added to a lot of Maldavian dishes.

National drinks:
The Maldive Lady (a powerful and delicious cocktail, whose composition varies from bar to bar and island to island).

Local Products/Shopping

Local purchases include sea shells (only when bought in official shops; they may not be removed from the beach or from the sea), lacquered wooden boxes and reed mats. Jewelry to purchase includes gold, silver, coral, mother-of-pearl and turtle-shell items. However, there are strict prohibitions against the export of coral and turtle-shell.
