History

Laolongtou Great Wall was first built in 1381 during the Ming Dynasty. When the General Xu Da constructed Shanhajguan Pass, he selected Laolongtou as the site where the Great Wall stretch into the sea. To ward off attacks from the Mongolians when the tide was at the ebb or the water was lower in winter, the General Qi Jiguan built Estuary Stone City on the top of the great wall in 1957.

To reduce the impact of the waves on the wall, numerous huge iron works were down on the seabed. This unique method had been recorded in the China’s architectural history. When the Qing Dynasty united the areas on both sides of the Great Wall, Laolongtou Great Wall lost its military significance. Because it is symbol of dragon, Emperors Kangxi and Qianlong went here many times to worship their ancestors. In 1900, the Eight-Power Allied Forces invaded Shanhaiguan Pass and Laolongtou was destroyed. The great wall was renovated from 1984 and restored its splendid appearance.
