The Workers' Indoor Arena is located in Gongti Rd. Chaoyang District
of Beijing. With a construction area of 40,000 sq m, the capacity of
seating is 13,000 including 12000 permanent seats and 1,000 temporary
seats. It will be used for venue of boxing during the Beijing 2008 Olympic
and judo events during the Paralympics Games.
The Workers' Indoor Arena was newly built in 1961 for the 26th World
Table Tennis Championships. After that, the arena became an important
venue for major events and held various major table tennis, basketball,
and volleyball competitions. Renovations of the arena began May 26,
2006. The expanded complex includes a 1,628-sq-m energy resource center,
a main boxing arena, and two warm-up halls. New structural reinforcements
will protect to the arena from an eight-magnitude earthquake. The Workers'
Indoor Arena also got a major facelift from newly installed windows.
The new two-layer windows are made of an environmentally friendly aluminum
alloy and are energy efficient. And more, it has new ventilation, lighting,
and electromechanical facilities, and an additional 240 press seats,
30 VIP seats and a 40 sq m VIP lounge, making it more comfortable, safe
and people-oriented.
