Beijing University of Technology Gymnasium is located in the campus
of Beijing University of Technology and is the is the only Olympic venue
located in Beijing's southeastern area. With a total surface area of
24,383 sq m, the venue has a total seating capacity for 7,500 spectators,
including 5800 permanent seats and 1700 temporary seats. It will be
used for Judo and Badminton, Rhythmic Gymnastics during the 2008 Beijing
Olympic Games. After the Olympics, The Gym will provide spaces for activities
of students and faculty, whilst facilitating the training of the badminton
teams affiliated with the International Badminton Federation and the
General Administration of Sports. The gymnasium will occasionally be
open to the public.
Beijing University of Technology Gymnasium broke ground on June. 30,
2005 and is completed on October 9, 2007. It includes a competition
hall and a warm-up hall. The BUT Gymnasium boasts the world's largest
prestressed suspension dome ceiling 93 m in diameter. Also, the steel
used in producing the structure weighs less than 1,200 tons, averaging
60 kg per sq m. It can match the IBF wind speed standard and also keep
the room temperature constant at 25 degrees Celsius. A number of energy-saving
and environmental-friendly methods are used at the Gymnasium.
