Peking University Gymnasium is located in the campus of Peking University.
With a total surface area of 26,900 sq m, the venue has a total seating
capacity for 8,000 spectators, including 6000 permanent seats and 2000
temporary seats. It will be used for Table tennis venue for the 2008
Beijing Olympic Games and the Paralympics Games. After the Olympics,
the gymnasium will be transformed into a comprehensive facility for
table tennis, handball, basketball, badminton, volleyball, indoor football,
and gymnastics competitions; special sports training; physical education;
conventions; and art and sports performances.
Peking University Gymnasium was broke ground on September 17, 2005 and
completed in August 2007. The venue is designed by the Architectural
Design & Research Institute of Tongji University which won the bid
in the design solicitation campaign. The project's steel structure relies
on a seven-part support system comprising a pre-stress inhaul cable
and horizontal, vertical, and other supportive components. Its roof
resembles a table tennis ball between two hyperbolic surfaces, garnering
it the name "China Ridge." the gymnasium includes a natatorium
and is 122.6 m long from south to north and 87.7 m wide from east to
west. The table tennis venue on the first floor is 47 m long and 39.5
m wide. Taking post-Games use into full consideration, some more courts
and sports facilities will also be built. It will be able to hold national
and international big sports events and other activities. It will also
meet the needs of physical education, training and recreation for the
university students as well as serving the community.
