History

The construction of Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport was began in 1985, completed in January 1990 and put into use. The airport covered an area of 3,000,000 square meters. The runway and taxiway were 2800 meters long and 60 meters wide, which could meet B777, B747 aircraft take-off and landing. The apron was about 230,000 square meters, with 31 aircraft parking stands. The terminal covered an area of 16,000 square meters. The passengers handling capacity was less than 4 million people.
With a total investment of 1.61 billions CNY, the construction of phase two was began in December 2001 and completed in October 2005. This expansion project includes a terminal building of 70,000 square meters, apron of 170,000 square meters, parking lot of 37000 square meters and 19 conveyance system. The runway and taxiway were extended to 3200 meters long and the aircraft parking stands were added to 50. The passengers handling capacity was up to 7 million people and cargo handling capacity was up to 180,000 tons.
the expansion construction of phase three was began in 2008 and completed in December 2010. This expansion project included a second runway and an additional expansion of Terminal 2. It costed 3.3 billions CNY. The second runway was 3600 meters long and 60 wide. The new T2A Terminal had 41 aircraft parking stands and covered an area of 60,000 square meters. Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport became the 4th airport in mainland China.
the expansion construction of phase four was began in 2013 and will complete in 2016. This expansion project includes a third runway and a new terminal building. At that time, Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport will have terminal space of more than 7,000,000 square meters. The passengers handling capacity will be up to 60 million people and cargo handling capacity will be up to 2 million tons.
